Ratings are qualitative industry judgments — protection in the field depends on how the material is used far more than on which material is used. A medium material in a fitted cavity outperforms a high-rated material poured loose around the piece.
Match the material to the weight class
- Under 0.5 kg — keepsake jewelry, mini urns, paw print kits. Rigid gift box plus honeycomb kraft wrap inside a corrugated mailer is usually sufficient; the pack is also the retail shelf.
- 0.5–3 kg — ceramic and wooden urns. Fitted EPE cavity plus double-wall carton. This is the weight class where cavities start to matter more than wraps.
- 3–8 kg — large urns, crystal clusters, framed pieces. Molded or layered EPE, inner box, double-wall outer, and carton orientation marked. Bubble wrap alone does not move this class safely.
- Over 8 kg — stone monuments, benches, bulk cartons. Crate or pallet logic, load-rated corner protection, and ISPM15 heat treatment with the IPPC mark for any solid-wood packaging in international freight (China customs guidance).
The compliance notes buyers actually need
Amazon fragile packaging. Glass and ceramics must be individually packaged, protected against collision, and pass a 125 cm drop test without damage, in a sturdy six-sided box or fully secured in bubble material (Amazon Seller Central). If your products can end up on Amazon — your own or your buyers' — pack to this standard from the first production run.
Wooden packaging in export. Solid-wood packaging for international shipment must be heat-treated or fumigated by a customs-approved facility and stamped with the IPPC mark; suppliers cannot self-stamp (China customs guidance). Processed panels such as plywood and MDF are generally treated as processed material, but confirm per destination market.
Eco claims. If a line is marketed as biodegradable or compostable, state the material composition and the degradation conditions in writing — vague green claims create more risk than the packaging saves. Recycled-content and recyclability statements should stay within what your actual materials support.
